Question: Can Minwax Gel Stain Be Used Outdoors

The only downside of using Minwax Gel Stains or those manufactured by General Finishes is it’s not suitable outdoors where the wood surface is directly exposed to water or UV sunlight. If you do use, the external elements will cause the stain to lose its color fairly quickly.

Can you use gel stain outdoors?

Do not use General Finishes Gel Stain or any oil based finish outside where this direct exposure to water. If your furniture will be resting under a cover and not exposed to direct water, you may have a successful result. We recommend our Milk Paint or Exterior 450 products instead.

Is Minwax stain good for outdoors?

Minwax Wood Finish pigment stains are not intended for exterior applications. The UV in sunlight will fairly quickly cause the stain to lose color. The stain offers not abrasion protection and scratches and abrasions will be very apparent.

How soon after staining can I apply polyurethane?

If you are using a water based polyurethane then the stain should dry 7 to 10 days. You can shorten the wait by sealing the wood with a de-waxed shellac such as Zinsser Sealcoat after 2-3 hours and then proceed with the water based poly.

Why is Minwax stain still tacky?

If you applied the stain correctly, and it still remained tacky, it could be due to rainy weather or high humidity. In either case if the tackiness doesn’t go away, wipe the wood down with mineral spirits or naphtha to remove most of the stain, let it dry thoroughly, then try again using a fresh can of stain.

Is there a difference between interior and exterior stain?

The presence of fungicides in exterior wood stains is perhaps the most important difference between indoor and outdoor stains. These chemicals can be toxic to humans, so the products should not be used on indoor wood floors or furniture.

What happens if you use interior varnish outside?

It is fine to use exterior-grade varnish over interior-grade paint when the finished item will remain indoors, but not if it is intended for use outdoors. The exposure to the elements will degrade the paint layer and cause the varnish to fail, even though the varnish is exterior grade.

What happens if you don’t wipe off gel stain?

Wood stain is designed to penetrate into the grain of the wood, not to remain on the surface. If you happen to spread it too thickly, or you forget to wipe off excess, the material that remains on the surface will become sticky.

How many coats of gel stain should I use?

The gel stain will absorb slightly into unfinished wood but not into non-porous surfaces. Ideally, according to most manufacturer’s guidelines, you should wait 24 hours between each coat. Expect to have to apply 2-3 coats until the finish is even or opaque.

What do you seal gel stain with?

You can use any of our topcoats. Water-based products include General Finishes High Performance or General Finishes Flat Out Flat. Oil-based products include General Finishes Gel Topcoat or General Finishes Arm-R-Seal.

How long do you leave gel stain on before wiping off?

Let the stain dry for 5-10 minutes before wiping off for a medium color shade. Let the stain dry for 20-30 minutes before wiping off for a dark color shade.

Can you use gel stain over stained wood?

I’m using these french doors as an example but gel stains can be used on ANY existing finish. Kitchen cupboards, cabinets, previously stained furniture, factory finished, wood, veneer or laminate, and even previously painted finishes. This is because unlike traditional stain, gel stains don’t penetrate the surface.

Do you sand between coats of gel stain?

Gel stain will not require you to sand the product to a raw wood finish. I found gel stain to be more forgiving; because you will need to do multiple coats, you can even out the finish over time. Because gel stain is thicker, it can be used for more creative applications too, like for painting a faux wood grain.
