The only downside of using Minwax Gel Stains or those manufactured by General Finishes is it’s not suitable outdoors where the wood surface is directly exposed to water or UV sunlight. If you do use, the external elements will cause the stain to lose its color fairly quickly.
Can you use gel stain outdoors?
Do not use General Finishes Gel Stain or any oil based finish outside where this direct exposure to water. If your furniture will be resting under a cover and not exposed to direct water, you may have a successful result. We recommend our Milk Paint or Exterior 450 products instead.
Is Minwax stain good for outdoors?

Why is Minwax stain still tacky?
If you applied the stain correctly, and it still remained tacky, it could be due to rainy weather or high humidity. In either case if the tackiness doesn’t go away, wipe the wood down with mineral spirits or naphtha to remove most of the stain, let it dry thoroughly, then try again using a fresh can of stain.

The gel stain will absorb slightly into unfinished wood but not into non-porous surfaces. Ideally, according to most manufacturer’s guidelines, you should wait 24 hours between each coat. Expect to have to apply 2-3 coats until the finish is even or opaque.

Can you use gel stain over stained wood?

Gel stain will not require you to sand the product to a raw wood finish. I found gel stain to be more forgiving; because you will need to do multiple coats, you can even out the finish over time.
