Question: Can You Paper Over Skimmed Walls

If wall has been rendered & skimmed it is advisable to hold off wallpapering for upto 6 months to allow wall to dry out first. If the wall has just been re-skimmed after waiting a good week or so to make sure plaster is completely dry a couple of coats of ‘size’ should do the job.

Can you put wallpaper on newly plastered walls?

Newly plastered walls and ceilings need to be sealed before any wallpapering or painting for that matter, takes place. When this happens, the bond between the paste and wall is very weak and the paste and wallpaper will simply peel off. To seal a surface before you hang wall paper the wall also needs to be totally dry.

Do I need to sand walls after skimming?

It is only necessary to sand the walls if the finish of the plaster is not perfect . However if you are sanding the walls use a sanding paper that is over 120 just so you make it very smooth to the touch . Finally you can apply the emulsion on the walls and the result will be the one you hoped for .

Should I lining paper or skim walls?

How do you get a smooth finish when skimming?

Place this on an off cut of some kind that you have prepared with some pva. Spread it out and mark the time it takes to go firm but not hard. This is the point at which skim can be made smooth and the trowel marks will disappear. Once skim is hard the only way of smoothing it is by sanding.

What happens if you don’t water down paint on new plaster?

It’s especially useful if you are painting new plaster that has not been treated before. Standard emulsion painted onto an untreated wall will not dry well. It is likely to crack and to peel. If you don’t use a mist coat, you will find that any normal emulsion you apply afterwards sits on the surface.

Is it better to paint on plaster or wallpaper?

Our decorator says it’s better not to line with paper. WE painted straight onto plastered walls, as advised by plasterer. WE did use diluted paint the first coat though.
