Question: How Does Address Forwarding Work

Mail forwarding will take into account your previous address and redirect the mail to your new address. When your mail has your previous address on it, it won’t go to your previous address, instead it will go to your new address. In other words, USPS will catch your lost letters and redirect them to your new home.

How exactly does mail forwarding work?

The USPS mail forwarding service lets you select the date you want them to start forwarding your mail to a new address. You should start seeing mail at your new home on or just after your selected start date. Since the process can take up to 10 business days, your mail might not arrive on the exact date you selected.

How long does address forwarding last?

According to USPS, the service can forward mail for 15 days to six months (185 days) initially. If customers plan to stay at their temporary address for longer than six months and wish to continue forwarding mail, they will need to extend the temporary forwarding period.
