Why are 2 2×4 stronger than a 4×4?

1) Real world 2 X 4’s have knots in them. With doubled 2 X 4’s, the knots do not line up, so the assembly is stronger. 2) If it’s used as a long column, the maximum load is limited by buckling in the thin direction. The thin direction is twice as thick in doubled 2 X 4’s, so has eight times the resistance to buckling.

How much weight can a 2×4 attic hold?

They are not meant to support any weight. I personally wouldn’t put more than 20 pounds on a single 2×4 joist that is say, 10 ft long. In my own shed I have some long stuff stored on the 2×4 joists, but it is very lightweight – like a few spare vinyl siding pieces and they are supported by 6 or 8 joists.

Are 2×4 trusses OK?

2×4 rafters are not strong enough for low pitched roofs under any circumstance, so avoid if you are building a shed with a flat or very shallow roof.
