How To Find Sprinkler Valves

Will a metal detector find sprinkler valves?

A metal detector is unlikely to work because the valves are most likely to be plastic with very little metal in them. If you don’t have any luck probing small low spots near the begining of the zone, it may require someone to do a wire trace for the valve.

Where is my sprinkler master valve?

It is connected to the “master” or “pump” connection in your controller. For Generation 1 controllers, this is the blue terminal in the wall mount. For Generation 2 controllers, find the terminal marked “M”. In the image below, the master valve is in the small circular box to the left of the main sprinkler box.

Where is the main sprinkler system valve usually installed?

In newer lawn irrigation systems, the valves should be installed in valve boxes. These can often be seen easily. There is a single valve box located near where the irrigation pipes enter the ground in small yards.

Where is the water supply valve?

The valve is typically located within 3 to 5 feet of where the water main enters the home. If you don’t find it on the front wall, check for a mechanical room, or near the water heater or furnace. In a crawl space or with slab construction, the shut-off valve may be right inside the crawl space.

What does a shut off valve do?

Shut off valves allow for the safe control of compressed air in pneumatic applications and are used in a range of industries. Shut off valves are also a useful accessory to stop the air supply in controlled conditions where a process must work correctly and safely.

How do you trace an irrigation wire?

In automatic irrigation systems, a third way to find lost valves is to follow the wires from the controller. The wires run alongside the PVC pipe to the irrigation valve location. Dig small holes every ten feet to trace the wire. Be careful not to cut the wire.

How do I find buried sprinkler heads?

Many valves have metal parts you can locate by running the metal detector over the surface of the ground. Valves are located directly under sprinkler heads. Look for large, dry, brown spots in your lawn. This can indicate the location of a buried sprinkler head.

How can I find my sprinkler lines without digging?

If you prefer to locate the lines and heads of your system without digging, rent a valve locator or even a metal detector and mark areas once found – better yet, call call 811, a federally mandated service, and ask someone to come out and locate the system for you.

How do I find my sprinkler solenoid valve?

A simple tool known as a chatter locator energizes the valve solenoid, making it possible to locate the valve by listening for the clicking sound it makes. Another rental tool, known as a valve locator, can find a valve by tracing the controller wires using a transmitter, receiver, lead wires, and a grounding stake.

How do I know if my sprinkler valves are open?

Turning it to the left lifts an internal gate that releases water incrementally as it turns. The gate lifts entirely when the handle is turned fully counterclockwise. If the handle will turn no farther counterclockwise, the valve is open.

How do you know if your irrigation valve is leaking?

Water trickling steadily out of an irrigation head long after the irrigation system has turned off could indicate a leaking- or weeping- valve below ground. The diaphragm seal may have worn out and water is seeping freely through 24/7. It could also mean the valve is clogged, preventing it from fully closing.

Where is the outside water shut off valve?

Finding the Water Shut-off Valve Look for a rectangular or round cover that will be near the edge of your property, often between the curb and the sidewalk. Some water main valves are located along an alley, rather than the street. Open the cover to the meter to find the water shut-off valve.

Can’t find my main water shut off valve?

Just past the meter should be the main water shut-off valve, a red or green handle or knob. If you don’t find the main water shut-off valve inside the house, check outside near an external faucet. This location is most common in warmer climates where frozen pipes aren’t a concern.

Where are shut off valves located?

Crawl-space with no basement – the shut-off valve typically is located near the water heater or under the kitchen sink, but anywhere is possible. If it is located inside the crawl space, you may want to consider a second valve located in the living space, for example, near the water heater or under a sink.

What’s a check valve do?

A check valve is a device that only allows the flow of fluids in one direction. Since they only allow media flow in one direction, they are commonly referred to as ‘one way valves’ or ‘non return valves. ‘ The main purpose of a check valve is to prevent backflow in the system.

What is a sprinkler valve key?

OVERVIEW. The sprinkler valve key opens and closes sprinkler control valves. It is made of heavy-duty steel and is 30 In. in length. Open and close sprinkler control valves.

Should sprinkler valves be open or closed?

Make sure the sprinkler valve is closed, unless it’s the valve farthest from the main water source. You’ll want to leave this valve open and remove the sprinkler nozzle to allow air to escape when you turn on the water.
