What do you lay slate slabs on?

External Use – the slates must be laid on to a base constructed from well compacted hardcore and with a minimum of 75 mm thickness of concrete. Thickness of hardcore should be at least 200 mm on clay, sandy or peat subsoil.

How do you lay slate outside?

The main use of slate outdoors is to create walkways, especially when you use unshaped natural slate as paver stones. When placing slate, you can embed it in sand or earth, or you can place it on a concrete walkway and lay the slate with thinset mortar and grout (just like you would ceramic tile).

Can I lay flagstone directly in soil?

Consider using flagstones that are at least 1-1/2 inches thick as stepping stones or patio flooring. With the latter, flagstones can be laid directly in soil or a bed of sand. Thinner slabs should be laid in wet mortar or concrete to prevent cracking when stepped on.

Can you lay slate on sand?

Patios. Slate tile can be installed just like flagstones for patio settings. Then include a 2- to 4-inch layer of packed sand on top of that, along with the depth needed for the thickness of the slate tile you use. After everything is installed, you can fill the gaps between the slate pieces with sand.

Can you lay slate over concrete?

Slate is a type of stone, so slate tiles are durable and ideal for outdoor applications. Slate tiles are best installed over a concrete porch because it is a more stable surface. These tiles should not be installed over damaged or uneven concrete. Level your porch with quick-setting concrete if it has dips or rises.

Does mortar stick to Slate?
