What is the correct way to lay wood flooring?

Wood floors should always be laid perpendicular to floor joists—across rather that in between them. This will make the floors structurally sound and will help prevent the planks from separating, sagging or buckling. So, there is no right or wrong way to lay your wood flooring.

Where do you start laying wood flooring in a room?

The goal is to make the boards start about 1/2″ from the exterior wall on both the back side and edge. Since the wall was out of square, this varied as much as 1/2″ along the perimeter. In every hardwood installation, you should leave 1/2″ expansion joints between the flooring surface and the exterior wall.

Do you need to glue tongue and groove flooring?

The recommended glue for floating installation is Tongue and Groove engineered flooring glue. Glue placement is very important. The glue must be placed along the topside of the groove the full length of the grooved side and end.

Do I need underlay for solid wood flooring?

Because wood flooring is naturally much more substantial than a carpet or other flooring alternatives, it doesn’t actually need underlay. That said, we would normally recommend underlay when fitting a boarded floor to a wooden subfloor simply because it provides better insulation.

Can I install hardwood floors myself?

Which underlay is best for wood flooring?

Super Gold is the thickest underlay you can put under laminate or wood flooring. The main benefit of a thicker product is the warmth properties it has. It has a built in damp proof membrane so works great when laying on concrete floors for example kitchens and other downstairs rooms.

Do you glue down hardwood flooring?

Solid hardwood floors must be fixed into position by either gluing or nailing down to the subfloor. If you have a concrete subfloor, then you should glue your hardwood down, if you have a wooden subfloor then you can choose either method of installation.

Is it better to glue or float an engineered wood floor?

If you are trying to decide between the two, then for engineered wood flooring floating is usually the best option as you can install it quickly and don’t have to worry about which glue to use and how long to wait for it to dry. If you are installing hardwood flooring then using glue may give you a more stable result.
