Can ceramic be machined?

Machinable is a term used to describe ceramic materials that, after sintering, can be machined with traditional metalworking machine tools. The vast majority of technical ceramics are non-machinable and can only be processed with the use of diamond tooling once sintered, as the material is nearly as hard as diamond.

How to machine MACOR?

MACOR® can be machined with high speed steel tools but the use of tungsten carbide tools is highly recommended (ceramic tipped tools are not advised). If the tool squeaks, if the MACOR® surface turns greyish through tool wear or if too much force is needed – then stop and sharpen the tool.

What is glass mica ceramic?

Also known as Macor, this glass-mica ceramic withstands temperatures up to 1470° F. You can machine complicated shapes and precision parts from it in a fraction of the time it would take using other types of fired ceramic.

Is Macor brittle?

The most important factors when machining Macor are using proper machine speeds/feeds and coolant amounts. Because Macor is a brittle material, we recommend using soft jaws to help distribute the load.
