What do the lines on an oil dipstick mean?

What if oil level is too high?

The simplest way to tell if there’s too much oil in the engine is to check the dipstick. In most vehicles, the dipstick will have low and high marks that indicate the oil level. If the excess oil is just 1-2 millimeters above the fill line, this shouldn’t be cause for concern.

Is it OK to slightly overfill engine oil?

Overfilling engine oil far above the max level can cause serious damage to your engine. Luckily, there is no need for action if the oil level is slightly above. Adding an extra half a quart will not damage your engine. However, anything more than that could be harmful to the engine.

How accurate are oil dipsticks?

RAY: The dipstick almost never lies. It can give you a false reading if you use it incorrectly — if you check it while the engine is running, or just after it’s been shut off and there’s still oil in the upper part of the engine that hasn’t drained down yet. But generally speaking, the dipstick tells the truth.
