How To Remove Heating Element From Water Heater

Do you have to drain a water heater to change the heating element?

It is possible to change your water heater’s heating element without draining your tank. Although, keep in mind that it can be a bit more challenging.

How do you tell if a heating element in a water heater is bad?

Touch a probe on the multitester to each screw on the element. If you get no reading, or a maximum reading, the element is bad. Elements do have some resistance, so a reading of 10-16 ohms is normal, with higher ohm readings for 3,500 watt elements and lower readings for 5,500 watt elements.

Are upper and lower water heater elements the same?

Upper and lower heating elements are identical, and the temperature is regulated by the upper and lower thermostat and high limit device. Electric water heater elements can be different in size, but the most common is 12″ (300 mm).

What happens when a heating element goes out in a water heater?

If you have an electric water heater, the heating elements inside the tank can break and lead to a loss of hot water. Sometimes, your water will slowly start to cool down and this could be because the element has burned out. If the second element fails, you’ll be left with only cold water.

Why is my immersion heater overheating?

If the hot water is too hot, there’s a likelihood the cylinder is overheating, most probably as a result of the immersion heater thermostat not shutting down. For direct cylinders where the water’s ‘scorchio’, the unit may have been incorrectly wired. You’ll need to correct the wiring errors to fix the problem.

How do you free up an immersion heater?

It’s possible to loosen the joint by applying heat around the edge of the immersion heater element. Make sure your immersion heater element is clear of all insulation, removing more foam if necessary. Unscrew and remove the thermostat, if you haven’t done so already.

What causes a heating element to burn out?

The heating element of a dryer is the same as the coil in an electric heater. The metal conductor has resistance to the flow of electricity that makes it heat up. It burns out if it gets too hot.

Which element heats up first on electric water heater?

The upper thermostat first sends electrical energy to the upper element until the water temperature in the upper third of the tank reaches the thermostat setting. Power is then transferred to the lower element until the remaining water reaches the lower thermostat setting.

How can you tell if a heating element is bad?

Inspect the metal wire coil for any breaks in the wire. If the wire is solid and has no breaks in it, the heating element should be good. If the wire has a break in it, the heating element is defective.

What size is an element wrench?

Nearly all hot water heater element wrenches have a 1-1/2 inch hex to fit the standard 1-1/2 inch residential heating element head. In addition, they’re generally at least 5-inches long with cross holes drilled into the opposite end of the pipe so a screwdriver can be inserted for added torque.

Can I replace a 3500 watt element with a 4500 watt element?

It is ok to install lower watt: replace 4500 with 3500 as long as voltage is same. Lower watt means less heat, so element can last longer.

Do both water heater elements come on at the same time?

This means both elements are never ON at same time (simultaneously) unless specific wiring inside heater is changed significantly. One element is ON, or the other element is ON, or both elements are OFF. Lower element turns on-and-off during standby hours to keep tank temperature at thermostat set point.

Should both thermostats on an electric water heater be set the same?

The majority of electric water heaters have two thermostats: an upper and a lower, located under two control panels. To ensure your electric water heater works as efficiently as possible, you should set both of the thermostats at the same temperature.

Can you bypass a water heater element?

Yes, a water heater can still run if the bottom element quits. In most water heaters, the top heating element controls the thermostat and will still work even if the bottom element fails. So provided the top heating element is working, it can still produce some hot water even if the bottom heating element fails.

Why is my hot water heater not getting hot?

If an electric water heater is not producing hot water, it could be a simple problem like a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker. Additionally, some electric water heaters have a circuit-style safety switch located near or on the thermostat.

Why do I suddenly have no hot water?

If there is no hot water or the supply is not adequate or is too hot, check the upper thermostat. If the thermostat is busted, it should be replaced. Lack of regular maintenance can cause issues even though the thermostat is working because of sediment buildup. To fix this, flush your water heater.

What trips the reset button on a hot water heater?

The high resistance caused by a loose wire produces a substantial amount of heat that can eventually cause fires. If there is a loose electrical connection within your water heater’s system, your reset button’s thermometer can trip (regardless of the water’s temperature) if it picks up the heat from that loose wire.

How do I reset my electric hot water heater?

Somewhere on your electric water heater, you’ll find a reset button. It’s usually red and often located near the thermostat. It may also be hidden behind a removable metal panel on the unit—and then behind some insulation. Once you find the button, push and release it.

How long should an immersion element last?

An immersion heater may last for between two and three years before it burns out and needs to be changed.

Where is water heater relief valve?

Also known as the temperature/pressure relief valve, or the TPR valve, this valve is located near the top of the water heater. It usually features a lever you can lift up or down and has a discharge pipe that runs from the valve down to the water heater’s base.

Where is the hot water cylinder thermostat?

A thermostat for a hot water cylinder is generally fitted to the body of the tank by a strap or band. This allows some degree of flexibility in the vertical positioning of the thermostat. The typical location is around one third of the way up the cylinder.

Does it matter which wire goes where on a hot water heater element?

No, it does not matter which wire goes to which heating element terminal in this case – electricity can flow in either direction. Remember to replace the plastic cover that protects the wires and terminals before pushing the insulation back in place and then replacing the water heater element cover.
