Can you put new polymeric sand over old polymeric sand?

Out with the Old and In with the New The prep work is the most time consuming: you must have a clean, dry surface and joints. Unfortunately with polymeric sand replacement, you can’t just uproot any weeds and top it up. You have to completely remove all the pre-existing sand in the joints and start fresh.

Do I need to remove old polymeric sand?

Whether you are replacing and freshening up your polymeric sand or you are fixing a problem, polymeric sand removal may be required. Removing polymeric sand from pavers is not a fun process. You can try to use a hot pressure washer to remove the sand, but you may be left with some sand remaining in the joint.

How do you remove old polymeric sand?

The best way to remove polymeric sand from a paver surface is to use a hot water pressure washer at 180°F. The heat will reactivate the polymers in the product and allow the sand to be stripped away.

Can you put a second layer of polymeric sand?

It is not ideal to add a thin layer of polymeric sand on top of what’s already there for many reasons: the original sand can be old, of unknown condition, and/or dirty. The best approach would be to remove at least 1″ of the jointing material and follow the steps for a new polymeric sand installation.

How do you replace sand between pavers?

To replace sand that has been washed out, simply pour joint sand over the pavers. Next, sweep it into and across the joints using a stiff push broom. Keep the depth of the sand at ¼ inch from the surface of the paver. Afterwards, you can sweep the excess joint sand between pavers and store it again for future use.

You can’t pressure wash and apply polymeric sand on the same day. I should warn you that getting the stain off is a huge problem so it’s best to take the time to avoid it in the first place.

How do you remove Gator dust residue?

A white haze can be removed with efflorescence cleaner or a hot pressure washer. Alliance Gator products do not contain any Portland cement, so any hazing is easily removed and will weather away naturally with time and rain.

When using PolySweep it is important to apply a fine spray of water to moisten the sand until the water just starts to slightly sit on top of the joint. Wait about 5 to 10 minutes allowing the water to soak in. It may take 3-4 proper waterings in order to fully activate the polymeric sand.

Topping basically refers to filling the joints with regular sand and then topping them off with polymeric sand. We always recommend filling the entire joint depth with a single product to ensure a successful installation.

Why is my polymeric sand not hardening?

Polymeric sand cures by drying. And in order to fully set, it needs to dry out completely. If your polymeric sand didn’t harden up, it’s pretty much guaranteed there’s a moisture issue. If the joints remain wet after the installation, they will remain soft until they dry.

If us- ing polymeric sand, you can install it after the sealer application has properly cured for 24 – 48 hours. If polymeric sand is installed prior to sealing, be sure surface is dry for 24 hours before applying sealer.
