Should I use silicone or plumbers putty for sink drain?

You must seal the area between a sink’s drain body and the actual sink surface. Otherwise water will leak out between the two and begin dripping under the sink. Some plumbers and installers favor plumber’s putty for installing drains, while others lean toward the more modern waterproof material called silicone caulk.

Can you over tighten a sink drain?

In fact, pipes should only be hand tight to help aid the flow of water throughout your home. Over-tightening will also warp the rubber fittings inside the pipes over time, which can increase the risk of leaks. Turn a plumbing fitting only until you feel it tighten, then stop.

Why is my sink leaking underneath?

In general terms you want to aim for 2 to 3 full turns after hand tight. If it still feels loose, complete another full turn. A lot of plumbers will use both teflon tape and pipe dope. Depending on the thickness of the teflon tape you will want to use 3 to 6 wraps in the direction on the threads.
