Do you have to sand before using chalk paint?

The important thing is to completely seal your piece so no water can get in and damage your paintwork. Stir Chalk Paint® Lacquer well before starting and regularly during use. All the good stuff tends to sink to the bottom! Apply a thin coat of Lacquer.

Once your last coat of chalk paint has completely dried, you’re ready to wet sand to get that beautiful streak-free smooth finish with chalk paint. Use a damp Extra Fine Grit Sanding Block. You want that sanding sponge to be damp but not dripping wet.

After your piece is nice and clean, you will need your paint, a paint tray, a velour roller with a low or short nap, Annie’s flat brush, a clean rag and a 220 grit sanding sponge.

Can you use chalk paint straight over varnish?

You can generally skip sanding and priming before applying chalk paint, even when working with varnished wood pieces, because the paint can adhere to most surfaces. Untreated wood should have a coat of clear shellac applied with a cloth pad before painting; cure it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Can I use chalk paint without wax?

Wax is absolutely worth applying to chalk paint, especially if you want to protect your furniture and keep it looking good for longer.

Can you leave chalk paint unsealed?

Use what works best for you and suits your piece. Most chalk paint brands say you can choose to leave it unsealed too, but I don’t recommend it. Chalk paint is very porous and will pick up stains and look a mess in no time if you don’t seal it with something.

Why does my chalk paint scratch off?

Typically I will pick up an interior satin enamel paint because I know a satin finish provides great durability on furniture. When chalk paint isn’t properly protected and sealed it can chip and scratch pretty easily.

How many coats Polycrylic over chalk paint?

Polycrylic can also be applied as a finish coat over stain, too, which makes it nice for two-tone (like my media stand dresser) or tri-color pieces (like my tri-color dresser). The Polycrylic requires 2-3 coats.

Can I use chalk paint over polyurethane?

Theoretically, you should be able to apply chalk paint over top of your polyurethane furniture. Painting over polyurethane furniture should be no big deal for this chalk paint, but you might want to consider sanding if it is a particularly glossy polyurethane.
