Can a 4 way switch be used as a 3 way switch?
A 4way switch will not work in place of a 3way. The common toggle (in), whether up or down on a 3way switch, comes in contact with both switch leg (out) terminals. A 4way switch will not accomplish this.
Are 3 way and 4 way switches the same?

Can I hook ground and neutral together?
No, the neutral and ground should never be wired together. This is wrong, and potentially dangerous. When you plug in something in the outlet, the neutral will be live, as it closes the circuit. If the ground is wired to the neutral, the ground of the applicance will also be live.
