Question: Lawn Mower Loses Power When Cutting

The most common cause of loss of power from an electric lawn mower is accumulated dirt and debris in the mower blade housing. Over time, grass clippings and dust mix in the area that encloses the mower blade. With the mower unplugged, tilt it on its side. Wear gloves to prevent cutting yourself on the mower blade.

Why does my mower lose power when I engage the blades?

Whenever the blade is engaged, it rotates on a crankshaft to cut the grass. But if there is interference in this rotation, the engine can overload and shut off or lose power. Check the crankshaft connection to see if it rotates freely. The blade should be free of dirt, grass or debris as well.

Why does my mower bog down when cutting grass?

The most common reason why lawn mowers bog down, especially mulching mowers, is grass clippings sticking to the underside of the deck. Why does my mower dies when it gets hot?

Air leaks cause an engine to pull in too much outside air, which throws off the gasoline-to-air ratio. As the engine heats, parts expand, and all tiny gaps become larger. The result is a poorly running engine and one that eventually stops. Loose bolts are a common culprit in a mower engine that shuts down when hot.

Why does zero turn mower lose power?
