What does a bench cookie do?

These little round things are called bench cookies. Apparently they elevate your piece off a work station and enable you to use a router, saw, etc on the edges of your workpiece.

Why are there holes in work benches?

A bench dog is a removable clamp used on a woodworking workbench to hold an item fast while being worked. Bench dogs may be square or round. Round dog holes are easier to make but do not secure a dog as securely as square. Some woodworkers use round dogs which have been flattened on their rear to bear in square holes.

Why do workbenches have holes?

The dog holes in a workbench allow you to clamp workpieces into place. Simply applying extra pressure by hand is not enough to keep workpieces in place. There are a lot of scenarios in which even the slightest accidental nudge will cause you to cut too deeply into the piece.

What is a vice dog?

On woodworking vices, the dog is an adjustable piece of metal incorporated into the front of a vice in order to prevent a workpiece from moving if it is laid horizontally on top of a woodworking bench.

What is an anvil Peg?

They are used to secure an item on the surface of your bench that to don’t want to slide forward or back as you are sanding or using a plane. There are a series of round holes on the bench top that allow you to position the pegs in a number of different position to accommodate different sized work pieces.

You don’t need a lot of holdfast holes to hold most work on your bench. In fact, I’ve found that somewhere between eight and 10 holes is more than enough for most work.

38″ – 39″ (97cm – 99cm) makes a practical, tall workbench height. A tall workbench is good for detailed work, cutting joinery, and for power tool use. 34″ – 36″ (86cm – 91cm) tend to be the most common workbench height for woodworking.

How deep do dog holes need to be?

So yes, 3″ – 4″ is a good target. If your bench is too thin, the easiest way is to screw some 2X stock to the underside where you want to bore your holes. Just make sure you mark where you want your holes so you don’t accidentally put a screw there.
