The single bore hole is how most doors are commonly prepped. This is the large diameter hole where the lock is mounted and the standardized size of this hole is 2 1/8″. Through the edge of the door there is a 1″ cross bore that extends from the edge of the door through the bore hole.

What does door bore mean?

Bore holes are the holes in the door that house your door hardware and allow it to be installed. The cross bore is the main hole drilled into the face of the door where the body of the lock (chassis) is installed.

What does no bore mean on a door?

We refer to the round holes where the door lock is installed as “bore holes” (brush up on your door hardware terminology here.) Most doors have one, two or three bore hole. If the door has no bore holes, you can simply install a non-turning or “dummy” knob or lever that serves as a decorative door pull.

Standard cross bores measure about 1 inch in diameter. The latch bore can be found on the edge of the door, and its standard size is 2 1/8 inches. Also measure the door’s backset, which is the length straight from the middle of the cross bore out to the door’s edge.

Are door knobs standard?

To have the door function properly, you will have to make sure that the door knob you buy is the correct size for your door. The standard size for a door knob diameter is either 2 3/8 inches or 2 3/4 inches and these knobs will usually fit doors that are anywhere between 1 3/8 inches to 1 3/4 inches thick.
