What Is The Difference Between Fired And Unfired Clay

Fired Clay. There is quite a difference in the color of the clay from unfired to fired–rich, deep red to a chocolate brown. The clear glaze actually seems to accentuate the speckling in the stoneware.

What is unfired clay?

Unfired clay is called Greenware. Clay contains moisture. It actually contains water in a sufficient amount so that the clay is soft and malleable. It’s at this stage that the clay can easily be formed into different shapes. The clay plate above will be painted and then fired in a kiln up to about 2,000 degrees.

What happens if you don’t fire clay?

If it remains unfired it will eventually crack and fall apart. Water based clay becomes brittle when dry. I don’t have a kiln either but I looked around and found a ceramic studio that does firing for a small fee per piece, depending on the size.

Can you fire clay in a regular oven?

Yes, you can, but a home oven won’t reach the same high temperatures as an industrial kiln. Oven-dried pottery made at home will not be as hard & durable as kiln fired pottery. Pottery dried in a home oven is not made from standard pottery clay, but special oven-dry clay.
