Why Are Plastics Not Recycled

We often simply throw away all plastics into the recycling bin, however, due to the material properties of plastics, not all can be recycled. The leftover 10% of the global plastic production are thermoset plastics which when exposed to heat instead of melting, are combusting, making them impossible to recycle.

Why is it so difficult to recycle plastic?

Plastics have overlapping densities over a very narrow range. There are more than 50 different types of plastics, making them more difficult to sort and reprocess than other recyclable materials.

Why is plastic not recycled as much as other materials?

But with plastic, it is not that simple. While virtually all plastics can be recycled, many aren’t because the process is expensive, complicated and the resulting product is of lower quality than what you put in. The carbon-reduction benefits are also less clear.

What plastics are not being recycled?

Examples of non-recyclable plastics include bioplastics, composite plastic, plastic-coated wrapping paper and polycarbonate. Well known non-recyclable plastics include cling film and blister packaging.

What is the biggest problem with recycling plastic?

In these “all bottle recycling” programs, the non-recyclable plastics must be sorted out — a labor-intensive and costly job — and most of what is collected must be sent to a landfill or an incinerator. Once plastic has been collected and sorted, it faces a weak market.

How can you tell if plastic is recyclable?

Recyclable plastic usually comes with a little recycling symbol printed on the bottom and depending on the product, there might be a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 stamped in the center of the symbol. It’s easy to miss, but this tiny digit is actually pretty important, because it’s an ID.

There are significant safety challenges facing the waste/recycling industry. They include chemical exposure, combustible dust explosions, machine guarding hazards, and exposure to powerful equipment with moving parts.

Is plastic really a problem?

But the problem with plastic is that most of it isn’t biodegradable. It doesn’t rot, like paper or food, so instead it can hang around in the environment for hundreds of years. Each year, 400 million tonnes of plastic is produced and 40% of that is single-use – plastic we’ll only use once before it’s binned.

“Overall recycling has a lower carbon footprint, lower [greenhouse gas] emissions, and relies less on resources extraction” than virgin materials, explained Pieter van Beukering, professor of environmental economics at the Free University of Amsterdam.

Does recycling actually help the environment?

By reducing air and water pollution and saving energy, recycling offers an important environmental benefit: it reduces emissions of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and chlorofluorocarbons, that contribute to global climate change.
