Question: How Often Should You Clean A K&N Air Filter

The general rule of thumb is that the filter needs to be cleaned when the dirt build up gets as thick as the wire mesh. The usual interval is 30,000 – 50,000 miles depending on driving conditions. We recommend that you check your filter about once a year in normal usage.

What happens if I don’t oil my K&N filter?

K&N filter elements have larger holes than stock air filters to allow more air through. The trade off is that without the oil, those larger holes would let in more dust type particles which, as anyone who knows engines will tell you, is not good for the engine.

Do you oil both sides of a K&N air filter?

When using the air filter oil squeeze bottle found in K&N® filter cleaning kit 99-5050, apply K&N air filter oil evenly along the crown of each pleat. Allow the oil to wick for approximately 20 minutes, and then touch up any light areas on either side of filter until there is a uniform red color on all areas.

Do K&N filters let more dirt in?

Yes K&N air filters will let in a lot more dirt. Stock engines don’t consume enough air for the oem filter to be a restriction.

Is a K&N air filter worth the money?

As a matter of fact, the K&N air filter is not worth the extra money compared to ordinary air filters if your car is a regular car. The effect of these filters on regular cars are not worth the added risk it poses to the engine.

Do K&N filters damage engines?

K&N filters will not damage the engine internals but they can damage or at least coat the Mass Air Flow sensor if your car has one and most cars now do. The oil that the K&N filter is soaked in can separate and contaminate the wires of the MAF.

How much horsepower does a K&N air filter add?

So if you can get cooler air into your engine, your car will be able to mix more fuel with that air, making more power. Combine that with the more air through the larger and less restrictive filter and intake tube and you can see up to a 10-15 horsepower increase.

How long does K&N oil take to dry?

STEP 4 – DRY After rinsing, gently shake off excess water. Allow filter to dry naturally for 20-30 minutes. The filter does not need to be completely dry and can be slightly damp before moving to the next step.

Can you over oil a K&N filter?

MAF Sensors and K&N Filters If over-oiled, the oil can end up on the sensitive wires of the MAF and cause it to incorrectly measure air consumption. This can lead to a check engine light and to lean air/fuel mixtures.

Are K&N filters better than stock?

K&n does not filter as well as a paper filter. You will notice zero improvement in mileage and zero butt dyno improvement. The only improvement from a K&N will be accelerated wear on your motor due to it letting in the fine dust particles that the stock paper filter actually filters out.

What makes K&N good?

K&N Engineering has been manufacturing air filters for over 30 years. The company uses an oil-impregnated, cotton-gauze filter element surrounded by a wire mesh. This design is superior to a paper element because it allows for superior airflow while maintaining effective air filtration.

Does a K&N filter void warranty?

– WILL USING A K&N® REPLACEMENT AIR INTAKE SYSTEM VOID MY FACTORY WARRANTY? No.

Does a K&N filter improve gas mileage?

Yes, K&N air filters can increase your gas mileage. High-flow air filters feed clean air to your engine, helping it burn fuel more efficiently, which enables you to save money at the pump.

Why are K&N air filters so expensive?

Simply put, a K&N unit costs a lot more than a basic paper drop-in filter because all that designing, engineering, manufacturing, and testing really does add up. Flash forward 10 years (and several car upgrades later) and I’ve seen it all when it comes to K&N filters.

How long does a K&N air filter last?

K&N High-Flow Air Filters™ are designed to last for the life of your vehicle, and are protected by a Million-Mile Limited Warranty. With normal use, they can go up to 50,000 miles before a cleaning is needed (the larger conical filters included with K&N intake systems can go up to 100,000 miles between services).

Does K&N air filter make car louder?

There is no increase in noise. The advantage over the OEM paper element filters is the reduced restriction and greater air flow. The engine does not have to work as hard aspiring the intake air so that volumetric efficiency is improved.
