How To Install Kerdi Membrane On Floor

Can KERDI be used on floors?

The material is equally suitable for creating level substrates in floor renovation projects e.g. residential bathroom installations designed for foot traffic. Schlüter®-KERDI-BOARD is simply cut to size with a utility knife. The gridlines printed on the surface are helpful for neat and quick installation.

Can I use Kerdi membrane on floor?

With the KERDI-SHOWER-TT thin shower tray on a wood subfloor, you can build up the rest of the bathroom floor by installing either a 5/8″ or 3/4″ plywood/OSB panel on top of the wood subfloor along with DITRA or another Schluter®-Systems uncoupling membrane.

Can Kerdi membrane be installed over plywood?

The Kerdi membrane system requires a 2” overlap at all seams; either with the membrane itself overlapping adjacent piece or with the use of Kerdi-Band tape. Since thin-set mortar works over almost any substrate, the Kerdi system can be used over drywall, plywood, or the various cement boards mentioned above.

What do you put under Kerdi membrane?

The type of bonding mortar used to apply KERDI must be suitable for the substrate and must penetrate and engage the membrane fleece. For all the substrates listed in this Handbook (e.g., gypsum board, cement backerboard, etc.), Schluter SET™, ALL-SET™, FAST-SET™ or an unmodified thin-set mortar is recommended.

Can you tile over Kerdi membrane?

Since KERDI is impervious, it does not deprive the mortar of its moisture. This allows the cement to properly hydrate, resulting in a strong, dense bond coat. In general, modified thin-set mortar is not recommended to set ceramic and stone tile, including large format tiles, over the KERDI membrane.

Can you install KERDI-BOARD over drywall?

Yes. Once you install KERDI over the drywall panels, they will be completely protected from the water and vapor in your tiled shower.

Can you put Kerdi membrane over cement board?

Yes,Kerdi can be installed on drywall or cement board. However if installed on drywall it is only protecting one side. All shower/tub areas should have concrete board (I prefer hardiboard).

Should I prime drywall before KERDI?

No. It is not necessary to tape the joints between drywall panels before installing KERDI. If you must tape the joints per fire code requirements, make sure to apply a latex primer over the taped joints before installing KERDI.

How thick is Kerdi membrane with thinset?

The material is physiologically safe and does not require special disposal. KERDI is 8-mil thick and has a water vapor permeance of 0.90 perms, when tested according to ASTM E96, using Procedure E at 90% relative humidity.

Do I need a vapor barrier behind Kerdi?

NO – DO NOT us a vapor barrier behind Kerdi. It is a vapor barrier.

Is KERDI-BOARD waterproof on both sides?

Kerdi-Board panels consist of an extruded polystyrene foam panel, with a special reinforcement material on both sides and fleece webbing for effective anchoring in thin-set mortar. These multifunctional tile substrate and building panels are thus perfect for creating bonded waterproofing assemblies with tile coverings.

Do you need waterproof membrane on cement board?

Contrary to popular thought, tile and grout are not waterproof, and some moisture will penetrate even if sealant is used. However, if you choose to use concrete backerboard, which is much stronger and more durable than gypsum board, a water vapor membrane must be placed underneath it or a sealant applied on top of it.

How long should KERDI dry before tiling?

Wait 24 hours after the membrane (i.e., Schluter®-KERDI-BAND and Schluter®-KERDI) installation is complete to allow for the final set of the mortar and to ensure waterproof performance of the assembly at seams and connections before water testing.

What happens if you use modified thinset on KERDI?

Modified thinset mortars aren’t recommended for use with Kerdi because they must dry out to gain strength, whereas the membrane inhibits drying, which can lead to unpredictable results. Schluter’s recommendation is to use unmodified thinset mortar when installing Kerdi over most shower substrates.

What size trowel do you use for Kerdi membrane?

A 1/4″ x 3/16″ (6 mm x 5 mm) V-notched trowel or the Schluter™-KERDI-TROWEL is recommended.

Can you put Kerdi membrane over drywall mud?

No. It is not necessary to tape the joints between drywall panels before installing KERDI. Joint compound can be water soluble and should be protected from the moisture in the thin-set mortar used to install KERDI.

Can you put waterproof membrane on drywall?

The best way to waterproof your drywall is to use a waterproofing primer. You can find both oil- and latex-based waterproofing primers made by most paint manufacturers. These products are created specifically to prevent mold and mildew on the surface to which they are applied.

Can I use Schluter all set on cement board?

It is engineered for use with Schluter membranes and boards, including tile installation. Schluter ALL-SET™ meets or exceeds the American National Standard Specifications for Modified Dry-Set Cement Mortar, ANSI A118.

Is Schluter Kerdi worth it?

Great product. It takes a little longer than the traditional mud shower bed and water-proofing methods, but it is worth it. My shower is water-tight, and the sloped floor drains water perfectly. The finished product looks great.

Can I use thinset on painted drywall?

Thinset bonds best with a porous surface, such as new drywall or backerboard, which needs no preparation, but you can apply it over painted walls or tiles that are flat and in good condition as long as the shiny finish is removed.

Can Schluter go on drywall?

The manufacturer says regular drywall is fine because the Kerdi membrane is waterproof. Jun 30, 2018.
