What To Use Instead Of Kerdi-Fix

What is an alternative for KERDI-FIX?

Customer Review. I ran out of Kerdi-Fix and had to get another tube quick and couldn’t wait the 2-3 days shipping. After a lot of research I discovered my local big box hardware store sold Sikaflex, a polyurethane sealant which bonded KERDI just as tight and tough as Kerdi-Fix if not better.

Is KERDI-FIX necessary?

KERDI-FIX is required to bond the KERDI membrane to the stainless steel Schluter®-KERDI-DRAIN bonding flange and can be used to bond KERDI to building elements such as bathtubs, window elements, and door frames. Apply KERDI-FIX to the substrate and spread evenly with an appropriate notched trowel.

Can I use tile adhesive on Kerdi board?

Since KERDI is impervious, it does not deprive the mortar of its moisture. In general, modified thin-set mortar is not recommended to set ceramic and stone tile, including large format tiles, over the KERDI membrane.

Does Thinset stick to KERDI-FIX?

Kerdi fix does not stick to thin-set FYI. So if you pre-treated the backs you just ruined the corner.

Can you use KERDI on cement board?

Yes,Kerdi can be installed on drywall or cement board. All shower/tub areas should have concrete board (I prefer hardiboard).

How long should Kerdi dry before tiling?

Wait 24 hours after the membrane (i.e., Schluter®-KERDI-BAND and Schluter®-KERDI) installation is complete to allow for the final set of the mortar and to ensure waterproof performance of the assembly at seams and connections before water testing.

How do you glue KERDI-BOARD?

Apply thin-bed adhesive over the substrate with a notched trowel and fully embed the anchoring fleece of the Schlüter®-KERDI-BOARD panels in the adhesive bed. Tightly abut the individual panels and align them appropriately. Observe the curing times of all materials.

Can you paint over Kerdi membrane?

Yes you can paint over Kerdi board but you will need to give it a light coat of joint compound and do a little sanding.

What happens if you use modified thinset on KERDI?

Modified thinset mortars aren’t recommended for use with Kerdi because they must dry out to gain strength, whereas the membrane inhibits drying, which can lead to unpredictable results. Schluter’s recommendation is to use unmodified thinset mortar when installing Kerdi over most shower substrates.

Which Thinset for KERDI?

Schluter SET™, ALL-SET™, FAST-SET™ or an unmodified thin-set mortar must be used to construct all KERDI seams to ensure watertightperformance of the system.

Can you use premixed thinset on Schluter?

No. Schluter®-Systems does not recommend the use of premixed thin-set mortars (mastics/adhesives) in any KERDI installation.

What is unmodified cement?

In general, unmodified thin-set mortar is a blend of Portland cement, sand, and water retention agents that is mixed with water by the user. 1 when mixed with water). Unmodified thin-set mortar may also be referred to as dry-set mortar by the manufacturer.

Can you use modified thinset for Schluter?

In general, we don’t recommend the use of modified thin-set mortar to set tile over the membranes because these mortars must air dry to cure properly. When sandwiched between two impervious layers such as DITRA and porcelain tile, drying takes place very slowly through the open grout joints.

Can I use Schluter all set on cement board?

It is engineered for use with Schluter membranes and boards, including tile installation. Schluter ALL-SET™ meets or exceeds the American National Standard Specifications for Modified Dry-Set Cement Mortar, ANSI A118.

Can Kerdi be installed over plywood?

The Kerdi membrane system requires a 2” overlap at all seams; either with the membrane itself overlapping adjacent piece or with the use of Kerdi-Band tape. Since thin-set mortar works over almost any substrate, the Kerdi system can be used over drywall, plywood, or the various cement boards mentioned above.

Can you install Kerdi over drywall?

Yes. Once you install KERDI over the drywall panels, they will be completely protected from the water and vapor in your tiled shower.

Does Kerdi board need a backer?

Kerdi over drywall backing It’s not quite as simple when you are installing a product like Schluter’s Kerdi waterproof membrane. Schluter actually recommends sheetrock as a backing. Factor in that drywall is easy to install and easy to thinset over and you can see the appeal of waterproofing your shower this way.

Can you paint over KERDI-FIX?

Schluter Kerdi Fix can be painted over with most dispersion paints. The suitability of the material must be verified based on the anticipated chemical, mechanical and/or other stresses.

What is polyurethane sealant?

Polyurethane sealers are flexible and versatile construction sealants appropriate for a number of surfaces like wood, metal, plastic, masonry, aluminum, stucco and much more. They’re water tight and flexible under any weather condition, making them perfect for sealing gaps and joints on the exterior of structures.

Is Schluter Kerdi fix paintable?

KERDI-FIX is odorless, weather- and UV-resistant. The product is elastomeric, free of solvents, and provides a strong bond to most materials, including wood, stone, concrete, metal, glass, and many synthetic materials. KERDI-FIX can be painted over with most alkyd resins or dispersion paint types.

Can you tile right after laying Ditra?

Once DITRA has been installed on the substrate, tile can be installed right away. No need to wait for the mortar to cure.
